Former Olympic champion Ezekiel Kemboi disqualified and stripped the bronze medal he won at Rio Olympics.
Kemboi was disqualified for stepping inside the track during the final race and the medal handed to France’s Mehiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad who had finished fourth behind Kemboi but appealed against Kemboi’s transgression.
The international athletics governing body IAAF released the following statement confirming the disqualification of Kemboi in favor of the Frenchman.
“A protest was presented by the French team after the 3000m steeplechase men final against Kenyan athlete Ezekiel Kemboi … claiming he had stepped off the track,
“An appeal jury met and examined the video of the race, confirming that Kemboi, after clearing a water jump, had stepped outside the track on the curved part before the home stretch” the IAAF statement reads.
According to race track rules, it is a violation of the rules for any athlete to step off the inside edge of the track when running around bends.
Ezekiel Kemboi has won 2 Olympic gold medals (2004 Athens & London 2012) and 4 successive world titles, a commonwealth gold as well as an All Africa Games crown.
